Samit Patel has been added to the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) squad for the Emirates Airline Twenty20 tournament in Dubai and the annual Champion County match in Abu Dhabi.

The Nottinghamshire and England all-rounder replaces Durham’s Scott Borthwick, who has extended his stay with Wellington CC in New Zealand.

The four-day match, which is the annual curtain raiser for the English county season, will be between MCC and Yorkshire and begins on Sunday 20th March.

Patel is one of five cricketers with England experience included in the squad, along with Bell, Kent’s James Tredwell, Warwickshire all-rounder Rikki Clarke and Durham bowler Graham Onions. Nottinghamshire’s Jake Ball and Essex all-rounder Tom Westley are also included having recently returned from England Lions duty in the UAE.

The Champion County match will be preceded by the Emirates Airline Twenty20 tournament on Friday 18th March, for which Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara will be part of the MCC squad. Yorkshire Vikings, Lancashire Lightning and the UAE national side will also take part in the tournament.

John Stephenson, MCC Head of Cricket, said: “Samit is the perfect replacement for Scott and has played for MCC in the Champions County and Emirates Airline Twenty20 before so will be a great asset to us. He is an experienced county and international cricketer and adds a nice balance to the side so I’m very pleased that he’s available to play for us.”
